“Legal” Doesn’t Mean Safe — and Wilmington Residents Know It.
The EPA hasn’t updated legal limits for most water contaminants in over 20 years.
Wilmington is nationally recognized as ground zero for GenX exposure because it was the first major city to discover widespread, unregulated GenX contamination in its public water supply. A 2018 study showed 97% of Wilmington homes tested had detectable GenX in their tap water.
But GenX isn’t even the worst one. It just got the most attention. We have 21 others that are even more concerning.

The Hidden Risks of Common Water “Solutions”
Many families turn to water softeners or reverse osmosis (RO) systems, but few are aware of the tradeoffs.
Softeners and Dementia Risk
A 2023 study in the journal Environmental Science & Technology found that higher levels of lithium in softened waterwere associated with increased rates of early-onset dementia in some populations.

While more research is needed, the potential link between softening methods and cognitive health shouldn’t be ignored.
RO and “Dead Water”
Reverse osmosis strips water of everything — including essential minerals like magnesium and calcium. What’s left is ultra-purified, low-conductivity water that doesn’t support electrical signaling in your body.
Why does that matter?
Your cells depend on electrolyte balance and conductivity for nerve signals, hydration, and energy metabolism. RO water has been called “dead water” because it lacks structure, minerals, and charge — meaning your body has to give up its own minerals to re-balance it.
Studies also show that long-term consumption of demineralized water may:
